Why I’m Running

I’m running because I care about my home, I care about my family, and I care about our community. Throughout my life, I’ve watched Iowa decline: in its education, its water, its healthcare, and in its safety. I don’t believe in giving up on Iowa, and I don’t think Iowans are ready to give up either. I’m running to represent Iowa House District 90 because we need a fresh perspective in the legislature. It’s time for the next generation of leaders to take on the problems that have faced us for generations. I will fight for my future, your future, and Iowa’s future. I will defend our educators, our workers, our students, and our elders. I am humbly asking for your vote on June 7th, 2022 to tag me into the fight of our lives and my generation.

Andrew’s Story

Andrew Dunn is a community organizer, nonprofit leader, and 7th generation Iowan running for Iowa House  District 90, serving northeast Iowa City and the area surrounding the UI graduate colleges. From a young age, Andrew’s parents taught him the importance of education, hard work, and fighting for what’s right.

Andrew’s most formative years occurred during and shortly after the 2008-09 financial crisis. Before 2008, Andrew’s parents worked seven jobs to provide for their family of five. When the Recession hit his family lost it all: their jobs and their home. Andrew decided from that point on to do everything he could to be an advocate for the most vulnerable and working families like his own. He hasn’t stopped since.

Andrew has spent years fighting for others, especially students. As the leader of the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC), he advocated the state legislature on some of the most important issues facing Iowa’s youth and families: increasing education funding, enhancing student health, and expanding broadband access.

Later, as Executive Director of March For Our Lives Iowa, he empowered students to act and demand reforms to end gun violence in America. This advocacy led to the opportunity to work as an education researcher for the South Australian Parliament in 2018.

Andrew is also no stranger to progressive politics. He previously served as the Vice-Chair of the Dickinson County Democrats and is completing his third year in the Iowa Senate, where he serves Sen. Claire Celsi’s (D-21) legislative aide. In 2020 and 2021, he worked in Georgia to elect Senator Jon Ossoff, the youngest member of the chamber, and Senator Raphael Warnock.

Andrew is running to represent Iowa House District 90 because he knows that now more than ever, Iowans need a champion for the working class that will act on threats to quality public education, the climate crisis, racial injustice, and an increasingly hostile environment for the LGBTQ community.

A decade of experience in government and community activism has given Andrew the experience needed to hit the ground running when elected to serve the people of Iowa City and Iowa House District 90.
